Illuminated Manuscripts are basically documents with text and decoration. We'll create contemporary Manuscript book structures with rich, ornate, pattered illustrations, floral and alphabet letter embellishments with detailed borders. Learn construction and techniques on Open spine Coptic stitch bindings, and French Link stitch books. We'll work on 2 projects during this 6-week class, concentrating on concept and technique. Gold leaf application will be introduced for embellishments. Coptic stitch bindings are a beautiful addition to the spine of a handmade book. The French Link stitch book will include mixed media techniques with a touch of whimsy and the unexpected.

Experimental Watermedia approaches will be explored with watercolor and acrylic with a focus on composition, negative painting, and textures in still life, landscape, and figurative works.   Build up layers with translucent hues and simple printmaking techniques.
Metaphors and messages can play a thoughtful role in your works with added bits of collage and text. Be prepared to loosen up and experiment with different resists and textures to build up the surfaces, paint translucent layers, and create extraordinary shapes.

Journaling With Pens and Watercolor  New Class!  Sold Out!

January 10 to March 7 2017
Tuesdays 1pm to 4pm

Pens and watercolor are a very useful combo for journaling on location and just about anywhere! We’ll work with an assortment of water soluble and waterproof pens to create textures, values and compositions in journals. This will be the foundation for watercolor transparencies. Learn how to paint watercolor layers and fused colors with intensity. This is your chance to play with shape making and combine images in an artful way on paper. Paint freely while dropping in color onto the wet paper surface.  And no worries if you’ve never painted or drawn before! - I’ll go over the basics and there will be images available to work from or bring some images of your own.
